“The Vertical Flight of a Smoky Sea Dove over Cold and Temperate Waters of the Atlantic Ocean “ Theater Performance Review

Ehsan Zivar Alam

Environmental Theatre Competition

The play is written by Pouya Pir Hossein Loo, and directed by Sima Sheibani.

The long title of performance is an important paratextulaity. This Interactive play is successful to present new style in Iran Theatre. It is perhaps the combination of oppressed theatre and performing theatre. Oppressed theatre as it makes the audience able to cooperate and performing as it has a text with dramatic structure.

The Vertical Flight of a Smoky Sea Dove over Cold and Temperate Waters of the Atlantic Ocean has a story. The story is affected by modern dramatic patterns and classic elements. Characterization and events happen in a same line. And the modern element is the way of narration. It is the combination of monologue and diary reading and we rarely have dialogue. Dialogues also show lack of mutual understanding. The performance is about 5 characters who are involved with immigration and their life is changing during the performance. Then what is the story. The story depends on audience. He/she chooses what the story is. He can accept university’s instructor or to be in the roles of a counselor friend of another person who destroys his love. The play has a story. The story is variable. Using video art is the main tool of Sheibani. In the beginning of the performance one audience should play as a role of a father whom his daughter is fighting with death in foreign country. We can say Sheibani and Pir Hasanloo created a game and the rules of it. They give passport to the audience and enter him to the game. He has to play and it happens in a professional place and it is different with oppressed theatre. The audience can touch theatre and its classic elements, such as light and decoration. Sheibani manages the stage during the performance. But at the end, a curious mind asks how successful is the performance in creating events?

When the audience is taught and learned to be a part of the play then his expectations raises. Most part of the performance is non stop monologues and sometimes it makes the story difficult to understand. He doesn’t understand that he is not supposed to comprehend the story but he should experience it. Somewhere between experiencing a story and making a story, he loses his roles and the performance will miss the balance.
